Srefa - Primal

Black metal from the Holy Land. You don't hear that quite often. Founded in 2020, Srefa, which means fire or flame in Hebrew, have released their very first release in the form of a 4-track EP called 'Primal'. The style of black metal that Srefa is introducing to us is a form of depressive black metal and atmospheric black metal.

Being a first release is nowadays not surprising anymore if it sounds like they have been releasing albums and producing/mixing/mastering for over years. The quality of the sound Srefa is pursuing is very good. Every instrument sounds very mature and professional. I haven't heard any of the (older) projects of the band members but they all know how to master their instruments.

Let's get the elephant out of the room. Yes, there is a woman on vocals but that doesn't matter at all. Most of the time, female vocalists in black metal are way scarier and haunting than the males. Furthermore, Dorin (vocalist) gives the whole band that little bit of a layer of hauntingness extra. Her vocals are just straight up raw and nasty. She does play it safe here and there during the EP but that is more than fine. The style of black metal Srefa plays doesn't ask for anything adventurous and difficult.

'Primal' has an enormous replay value to it and is being played multiple times after each other while doing this review without getting repetitive or boring. I guess that is because it is very accessible black metal that flows very naturally into slower (non) black metal bits that are placed at the right time in the songs.

Srefa's first ever release is one to be enjoyed by (beginner) black metal fans from all over the globe. From the heavy bass line to the howling screeches of Dorin, all black metal fans will love it for sure.
