Matriphagy - Prelude To Evisceration

Formed in 2016, Matripaghy from Boston have released their first EP. After releasing a single in 2017 and in 2018 a live demo, it was time that they put out something more than that. The death metal that Matriphagy produces goes all around the spectrum of heavier death metal. From technical to slam-like death metal, Matripaghy has it.

Starting with the artwork that has presented us which fits the music perfectly. Some seriously nasty artwork by Patrik Tegnander (Chainsaw Design). Ok, back to the music. For me the sound sounds really European. Very upbeat and unique riff patterns that make it a lot more interesting to listen to. During the slams, I do hear a lot of non-technical Party Cannon going on. Some serious caveman-like slams are being pounded through my headphones. It has been a while since I've enjoyed these kinds of slams but Matripaghy makes it work in their already heavy death metal.

No, the whole sound doesn't sound like any generic down-tuned brutal death metal/slam band. Matripaghy makes it sound like you are listening to a new old school death metal band and then pounds your ears with insane brutal death metal production and quality. They do take a risk here and there with the progressive elements and tempo changes which might put some people off. Yes, there are the usual elements you find in a lot brutal death metal/slam bands/projects like the build-ups toward the slams but Matripaghy makes it interesting by making it a more unique by adding some 'out of the blue' bass riffs by Ray Brouwer like Chris Ryan from Party Cannon does as well.

'Prelude To Evisceration' sounds incredibly British/European to me for a Boston based band. That has really surprised me a lot to be honest. It's a fun release to listen to and that says something. A 6-track EP that makes me long for a lot more is rarely something that happens today. Matripaghy has done it though. Hopefully they don't change this sound and make more music like this in the future and then I will think they will make a name for themselves in the (USA) brutal death metal scene.
