Malefic Throne - Malefic Throne

If you are not familiar with Malefic Throne, I wouldn't blame you. The band just started in 2020 and features members of Morbid Angel (Steve Tucker) and members of bands like Angelcorpse and Origin (John Longstreth and Gene Palubicki). Starting in 2020 you might have expected that they would've released something in 2020/2021 but there was something called covid and it might've interfered with the recording process of the self-titled EP release in 2022. Released through Hells Headbangers in the USA, Malefic Throne has made their entrance.

So, the 4-track self-titled EP which includes one cover of 'Nuclear Winter' by Sodom, starts off very strong and very Morbid Angel-like. During the opening track 'Deciding The Hierarchy', like one of the many excellent aspects of the song, the drums really stand out. The almost drum machine-like bits around the 3:50 mark during the song are beyond my imagination of the capability of metal drums.

I think the right term for the atmosphere that Malefic Throne is trying to create is ferocity. Yes, there are a lot of triggers but anybody who listens to death metal/black metal must have encountered triggers and should be able to listen to them. What also stands out are the vocals from Steve Tucker. He sounds powerful, strong and fierce. Mix that with the heavy Kataklysm-esque guitar tone and you have a massive sound that will stick in your head for days. That is because most of the riffs during the EP are very memorable.

This type of death metal is made to make you remember riffs and solos. The whole 20-minute EP is a perfect introduction of what Malefic Throne is going to produce in the future. These guys don't need guidance to a sound that most young debuting bands are searching for. Malefic Throne found their sound and perfected it.

The whole EP is a brutal listen and there are a lot of elements that keep the style of death metal interesting for the fresh first time listeners. If Malefic Throne is going to release something new, I am sure I will be listening and reviewing it.
