LAST RETCH - LAST RETCH

On one of my latest Bandcamp excavations, I stumbled upon Last Retch from Ontario, Canada. I've been on an Old School Death Metal kick lately so this first ever release from Last Retch is going to be right up my alley.

It isn't a long demo but the three tracks on the self-titled demo are filled with swampy gore nasty riffage. What does stand out in the first few seconds, is that Last Retch likes the old sound of death metal. Not the technical way of doing death metal but the slow doomy kind of old school death metal. Just taking a quick peek on the Metal-Archives and I see that all of the band members haven't been in other bands than Last Retch which is good but it is harder to compensate for other work that they've done.

So Last Retch is a brand new band that plays the old school death metal we all know and love. It does remind me a lot of the local Dutch old school death metal bands like Funeral Whore. The very simplistic style but very effective style of old school death metal. To make a bit of a more popular underground comparison is that you can compare the type of death metal with Skelethal.

The three track 'Last Retch' is a solid 'Demo' and I say 'Demo' is that nowadays a 'Demo' hasn't got the quality of what the old death metal demos used to sound like, which is a 50/50 for me. I love the sound that Last Retch is producing now however it would've been so cool if they released a real old school '90 demo.

What does sound like the '90's are the vocals and the bass. Those are just pure filth. Especially the vocals do take me back to that old school feeling you had when you first listened to Asphyx or Entombed. However, 'Last Retch' being very good for what it is, a first ever release, I do expect something more on their next release. I kinda feel that they are (literally) playing it safe for now. First see how the audience will respond and then come up with an amazing EP or full length. That is what I would love to hear and see from Last Retch. They've got the amazingly done logo, that just screams old school death metal and with the right follow up release, they are certainly going to be taken out of the cesspool of old school death metal sounding new bands.

Highly recommended for mid-paced old school death metal fans.
