KRIGSGRAV - THE SUNDERING

So, Wise Blood Records has signed one of their most experienced bands yet. Krigsgrav are a band from Keller, Texas and they are (currently) a blackened death metal band. They have played almost every genre of the black metal spectrum and they are quite successful in doing that. Krigsgrav released their last release back in 2018 so the new album needed to arrive sooner or later. Krigsgrav now has presented their new record 'The Sundering'.

For people that aren't familiar with the kind of genre that Krigsgrav is playing, it should be clear that its well written blackened death metal. The whole band is sounding really professional and well comfortable with their instruments. Throughout the album, you will find out that Krigsgrav likes to add certain moments in their songs that are filled with well placed tempo changes and genre-bending moments. Especially during the songs 'Abscene' and 'Timberline'. The 'Timberline' one did take me a bit by surprise but after listening to 'The Sundering' a few times, I got used to it fairly quickly.

There are elements during 'The Sundering' that have a big NWOBHM vibe. The tempo changes do have a lot of Diamond Head/ Iron Maiden-esque vibe. Especially during the song 'Spirit Walker'. Mix that with the blackened old school death metal bits and pieces and you will have the blackened cesspool that is Krigsgrav. And I mean that in a good way. The musicianship of the band members are very noticeable during 'The Sundering'.

During the later numbers, especially 'To Live and To Die Without Hope' has got a post-apocalyptic type of depressing feeling. The type of doomy gloomy abandoned feeling you have during an epic doom metal record. To get such a feeling during a blackened death metal album is really something where Krigsgrav should give themselves a pad on the back. It takes some balls to do such a thing.

Overall, 'The Sundering' is packed with everything you can add in the genre of black metal. Heavy Metal influences, doom metal influences and a lot more. The melodic parts during the album are the most memorable for me. The song 'To Live and Die Without Hope' is my to go to song during 'The Sundering'. It is a great release for both Krigsgrav and Wise Blood Records. So if you are not a close minded black metal fan, you will absolutely like 'The Sundering' by Krigsgrav. The album is out August 6th, 2021.
